商品説明※アメリカの現地出品者により作成されたため、英語のまま掲載いたしております。Twelve 78 RPM 12" Records Lot #57: Records Made Before Run-Out Grooves Became FashionableComments: After cleaning these records, I spent a couple hours listening to all of the sides from start to finish. The results were pleasing. In case it is not obvious, I will point out that the main photo in the photos section is a collage.Play Test Notes: All play with no skips or sticks of course. Background record surface noise levels vary. Please see notes with the list of records below for comments on the sound of each record.Visual Grading Notes For The Records: Grading and condition notes are included in the list of records below. You can see the condition of the labels in the photos section. These are all quality records that all play well.The Records Included: Conservatively graded using VJM grading. This is a batch of 12-inch 78rpm records from the time before end-of-record trailing run-out grooves were fashionable. Most of these records were pressed in the 19-teens. I acquired these records from different sources. Several of the records are part of a batch that I acquired in about 1992 at a local garage sale. The previous, presumably original, owner must have viewed records as a canvas and decorated the labels with tastefully scripted numbers and symbols and sometimes paint around spindle holes and elsewhere. Some might see those things as defects. I see them as a charming window into somebody's thinking over 100 years ago - folk art if you will. None of that art affects playing the records.The styles of recordings included vary. There are some pop songs, some orchestral classical and waltzes, some humor, a record of speeches, patriotic songs, marches and more. Details, including grading and play test notes are shown below. Please see the photos for additional information such as label and surface condition. Each record is shown front and back in a photo where you can get a good look at the label and a portion of the playing surfaces. A video sound sample for one side of one of the records is included just because I can include a two minute video and the record sampled is somewhat unique. Static sounds heard in the video when the view changes are from me handling my phone and not in the record's output. Victor 35655 - Victor Concert Orchestra - Amoureuse Waltz / Village Swallows Waltz - 1917 - VJM Grade E+/E Quite glossy surfaces with some light scuffs. - General background record surface noise was minimal on Side A, but I did hear one pop part way through. Surface noise is mild on Side B with a few patches of light ticks. Sound quality is excellent. Victor 35509 - Victor Concert Orchestra - Poet and Peasant Overture - Part 1 & Part 2 - 1918 - VJM Grade E Glossy with some light surface scuffs - General background record surface noise is minimal - hardly heard. The sound quality is excellent and the music is clear and wonderful. Victor 35605 - Victor Military Band - Katinka - Medley Fox Trot / Poor Butterfly - Fox Trot (New York Hippodrome Hits) - 1917 - VJM Grade E Glossy with very light surface scuffs. - General background record surface noise is minimal to very mild - hardly a bother. The sound quality is excellent and the music is reproduced faithfully. Columbia A6028 - Oscar Seagle and Columbia Stellar Quartette - Keep The Home Fires Burning / Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit Bag (And Smile, Smile, Smile) - 1918 - VJM Grade E visually Mostly glossy with light surface scuffs. Very slight loose warp that does not affect play. - General background record surface noise is heard as a moderate level crackle. The quality of sound in the music is excellent. Victor 35481 - McKee's Orchestra - Rosalie Waltz / Perdita Waltz - 1915 - VJM Grade E Glossy with a few light surface scuffs - General background record surface noise is mostly minimal with just a few ticks. Surface noise is more noticeable for about the first minute of side B. The sound quality is excellent. Victor 70123 (Single Sided) - Harry Lauder - When I Was Twenty-One - 1919 - VJM Grade E- Looks good with gloss and light surface scuffs, but there is a short (1"), tight crack at edge at the 7 o'clock position. The crack is more visible on the blank side and is barely audible in play. - General background record surface noise is mild with occasional light ticks. Sound quality is excellent. Columbia A6152 - Columbia Orchestra - (a) Carrots (b) She's Such A Love / (a) First Whisper Of Love (b) Dear One Far Away - 1920 - VJM Grade V+ Although the surfaces shine, there are numerous scuffs, light scratches and tiny blemishes. - General background record surface noise is heard as mild crackle with ticks and clicks here and there throughout. The music does sound good though and can certainly be enjoyed. Surface noise has not affected the sound quality which remains excellent. Columbia A6203 - Prince's Dance Orchestra - When Francis Dances With Me / Love's Ship - 1921 - VJM Grade E visually. Very glossy with a few light surface scuffs/light scratches/marks. - General background record surface noise is heard as a moderate swooshing crackle. - The Sound Quality is excellent. Victor 35283 - Victor Military Band - Lights Out March / Washington Post March - 1913 recordings but exact release year unknown to me - VJM Grade E Very glossy with some light surface scuffs and one tiny blemish that produces a pop. There is a very small blister before the play area near the edge on Side B - General background record surface noise is minimal - barely heard, but there is that aforementioned single pop that happens almost at the end of Side A. The sound quality is superb. Silvertone 37029 (Single sided with licensing label on blank side) - Silvertone Band (almost certainly Prince's Band) - Dream Of The Rose - probably released 1916 based on label design and catalog number (previous owner lettered "1918" on label) - VJM Grade E for playing surface - Playing surface is glossy with light surface scuffs. A previous owner - probably the original owner applied yellow paint around the rim and around the spindle hole. They also must have had something glued to the blank side (see photo at end of photos section) as there is rough residue that looks like it is holding scraps of paper at places all over the blank side. When cleaning this record I found that the residue on the blank side gets sticky when wet, but dried without stickiness. I didn't make any serious effort at cleaning off that residue. The old owner also did some fancy-lettering with symbols on the label. The record plays well and sounds good with general background record surface noise heard as a mild crackle. The music is reproduced in excellent fashion. Now, about this record: It is somewhat of a mystery to me, but this is what I found. There was a Columbia 12-inch release (Catalog A5600) with one side having matrix number 37029 (this record's catalog number). The song on that Columbia 37029 side was "Dream Of The Rose" credited to Prince's Band and listed as a "hesitation waltz". When I credited this record to "Silvertone Band" that's because "Silvertone Band" is written on the licensing label on the blank side and was probably how Silvertone sold the record. No artist is credited on the Silvertone label. Victor 35377 - Harry E. Humphrey - Lincoln's Gettysburg Address / Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death! (Patrick Henry's Speech) - Released 1914 - VJM Grade E- There is still glossiness, but also plenty of surface scuffs. There is a small flake from the edge outside play area on Side A. Right next to the flake "XX" has been engraved. Neither affects play. - General background record surface noise is mild with occasional ticks/clicks/pops. The sound quality is superb and the words of these speeches are heard loud and clear. Victor 55115 - Sir Harry Lauder - It's Nice To Get Up In The Mornin' But It's Nicer To Lie In Bed! / Doughie The Baker (It's Nicer When You Make It Up Again) - 1921 - VJM Grade V+ Good gloss but also numerous surface scuffs, small light scratches and surface irregularities. There is a tiny A-side edge flake outside of the play area. - General background record surface noise is mild but there are ticks, clicks and pops heard frequently throughout. There were a few seconds in the middle of Side B where surface defects aligned perfectly to produce a brief click storm. Otherwise, sound quality was good and the songs and spoken word are easy to understand. Shipping Notes: Each record is in an LP inner sleeve, inside of an old LP jacket and that is how they will be shipped. There will be an abundance of padding to help ensure safe travels. I'm an expert record packer, if I do say so myself! Rest assured that I know what I'm doing when it comes to packing shellac records for safe shipping. A large part of the cost of this lot is for the postage and packing materials required for safe shipping. I always pack carefully, but will be extra cautious with this batch of records. Signature tracking might be added which would require in-person hand-off from your mail carrier (else post office pick-up). Please see the photos for more info and a closer look at condition. Use your zoom-in powers for a real close look. A word on costs for safely shipping shellac 78 RPM records: They are fragile and easily breakable. (You know that!) If shipped in packaging that would be perfectly safe for a vinyl record, the chance of breakage is pretty good. I pack shellac 78's in an oversize box with plenty of padding. Proper packing materials cost me a bundle per package and the costs keep going up. On top of that, another pile of money is needed to buy the USPS media mail postage. Shipping costs are very real and add up to more than most people realize. It might not be apparent to you, but the amount that I ask you to pay for shipping is actually less than what it actually costs me to ship a record. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------LOCAL PICKUP RULES: If Free Local Pickup is offered for this item and you choose that option instead of an option to have the item shipped to you, there are a few rules to be aware of. The Goldmine Magazine grading system is commonly used for LPs and 45's, but the Vintage Jazz Mart Magazine (VJM) grading system is commonly used for 78's. Buyers accustomed to VJM grading might mistakenly interpret Goldmine grades for 78s in an unfairly negative way. VJM grades tend to give a more positive impression than corresponding Goldmine grades. I make use of both grading systems. The reason I use both systems is because Ebay only allows Goldmine grading values for "item specifics". Since many 78 buyers expect VJM grades, I also include a VJM grade in comments along with the corresponding Goldmine grade in the Ebay item specifics. I use Goldmine grading for sleeves. I always add descriptive comments that hopefully make the condition more clear. COMMENTS IN THE DESCRIPTION ARE A PART OF THE GRADE. Buyers should be able to make informed decisions based on the letter grade, comments, photos and sound samples (if provided). THE GRADE LISTED IN THE "ITEM SPECIFICS" SECTION IS THE GOLDMINE/EBAY GRADE. THE VJM GRADE IS SHOWN IN DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION NOTES ONLY. Record grading is heavily reliant on physical appearance, but also takes the sound of the record into consideration. That is why I play-test all 78s before assigning a final grade. The play-test can slightly raise or lower the grade derived by visual inspection. For instance, a record might look E- but sound E+ and end up graded E. Some level of general background record surface noise is expected with 78s even when surfaces look really good. General background record surface noise only lowers a grade if it seems excessive for the visual condition. I always comment on the level of background surface noise heard during my play tests. Record label condition is also noted and can, but doesn't necessarily, affect grade. The VJM record grading System vs. The Goldmine record grading system (This is my interpretation / adaptation of the guidelines. The attempt at mapping VJM grades to Goldmine grades is my own and is probably not perfect.) N (VJM) vs. M (Goldmine). New and unplayed (rarely used since it is next to impossible to assert "unplayed" for unsealed records). N- (VJM) vs. NM or M- (Goldmine). Looks very close to perfect, but may have been played. Signs of wear or damage are negligible. Any extremely small imperfections should be noted. E+ (VJM) vs. EX (Goldmine). Looks and plays extremely well with only light signs of handling and light wear. There may be very light, superficial scuffs / marks. Record surface noise is typically negligible but may be reasonably mild if noted. E (VJM) vs. VG+ (Goldmine). Glossy with mostly insignificant signs of wear like light surface scuffs or small blemishes whose effect on play is minimal. Small blemishes, such as a tiny shellac pimple, that might be heard for a few revolutions could exist but usually will be noted. E- (VJM) vs. VG (Goldmine). E- represents a higher end average grade for a 78. Retains some shine but may have a more significant covering of light surface scuffs and a few light scratches. Record surface noise is more noticeable but the record plays fine and the music can be enjoyed. V+ (VJM) vs. VG- (Goldmine). V+ represents a lower end average grade for a 78. Scuffs, light scratches and general use has dulled the finish somewhat. Wear is moderate to mildly heavy. Distortion and distractions while playing are not overwhelming. Surface noise is heard but the music is not buried by it. Still, no skips or repeats during play. V (VJM) vs. G+ (Goldmine). Moderately heavy wear, but still very playable. Surface noise and scratches are more audible, possibly competing with the music levels, but not overtaking them. V- (VJM) vs. G (Goldmine). Quite playable still, but distortion and heavy greying may be evident especially in louder passages. Surface noise and scratches may be quite loud, competing with the music for attention, but the music can still be heard well enough to be enjoyed. The listener may be required to tolerate heavier surface noise. G+, G-, G (VJM) vs. G- (Goldmine). Different degrees of a grade for records with thoroughly dulled surfaces and probably lots of scuffs and scratches. Can still be played without skips or sticks. The music might be nearly buried in surface noise but can certainly be heard. Grades of F and P are reserved for records that are in very, very bad shape that play with more serious issues. I will almost never bother to offer records with F or P grades for sale. With rare exceptions, nobody wants them.
